How to Become a Freight Broker

Introduction

Freight brokers, or property brokers, connect available truckers with manufacturers who have products that need to be transported. Freight brokers do not gain possession of the products; they merely organize transportation for the goods. Licensed freight brokers can be employed by established companies or they can start their own freight brokerage business. Aspiring freight brokers do not require much previous education. You can receive your freight broker license by following the simple steps below.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

Instructions

Step 1

Explore what it means to be a freight broker. You may want to enroll in a course that will teach you what being a freight broker will entail. You can take a course online or in a classroom.

Step 2

Sign up to be a freight broker with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Fill out the FMCSA’s 0P-1 Application for Motor Property Carrier and Broker Authority. Send in $300 to cover registration costs. Wait to be assigned a Motor Carrier Number before finishing and submitting your application. It will take about 4-6 weeks between the time that you send in your application and the time that it is processed.

Step 3

Speak with an insurance representative and get insured. In lieu of insurance, you can post a $10,000 bond. Check with a financial institution near you for more information.

Step 4

Send proof of your insurance coverage to the FMCSA. Find an agent in every state that you intend to conduct business in to be your Process Agent in case you’re ever in need of legal action. File a BOC-3 Form, Designation of Process Agent Form with the FMCSA.

Step 5

Get your FMCSA Authority. You are now a licensed freight broker. Find a job at a freight brokerage firm or open your own freight broker company.

Tip

You can submit the FMCSA forms online.
